Cooking Tater Tots using a Gluck Air Fryer rotisserie basket

When I was choosing which air fryer to buy I valued having a rotisserie pretty high and the Gluck 20 QT Airfryer Toaster Oven was my choice. This is an affiliate link that might pay me a commision if you buy something on Amazon. Amazon did not pay me for this review and I paid for this item.

This is my third time using it and the first time I have used the rotating basket.

I bought some frozen Ore-Ida Extra Crispy Tater Tots to try since this is my favorite brand and I really like tater tots. In the past I have always cooked them in the oven and it’s a challenge to get the outside crunchy while the inside is still moist and delicious.

I filled the wire basket up less than half full with frozen tater tots. I set the Gluck 20 QT Airfryer Toaster Oven on 400 degrees for 14 minutes and turned on the rotisserie.

That video at the top of this post shows it in action for 15 seconds. It’s not very loud or difficult to setup.

After cooking and cooling I dumped the basket of cooked tater tots out onto the paper plate for serving. They were crunchy outside and still soft and moist on the inside. I think I’m going to add a little time next time to see if I can up the crunchy factor just a little bit more but I’m still very happy with the results from this first time using the basket and cooking tater tots in my Gluck Air Fryer.

I’ve always liked fried shrimp and the SeaPak frozen brand is what I most commonly purchase at the grocery store. recently while shopping I noticed a new variety that I had not seen previously, the Budweiser Beer Battered Shrimp.

In the past I had always done all of my frozen shrimp cooking using my oven but I recently purchased a Gluck 20 QT Airfryer Toaster Oven , you can read that post here, and I wanted to use it for the second time to prepare these shrimp.

Gluck 20 QT Air Fryer Toaster Oven First Use Review

Gluck Air Fryer
My new Gluck Air Fryer

My microwave was behaving funny so I thought I should order a backup. I know this isn’t the same as a microwave but a lot of people prefer air fryers to them and I have never owned or used an air fryer before.

I did some shopping on Amazon and after watching some videos and reading some reviews and user comments ordered this

Gluck in the box

Soon it arrived and I began to unpack it from the shipping container and then read the instructions. I found a location in my kitchen that allowed ample space around the unit for proper airflow.

It will arrive with all of the accessories packed inside this space.

I took the accessories out and let the unit sit for 24 hours before installing the drip tray and running a short 15 minute cycle with no food inside. A small bit of odor but nothing strong or alarming was noticed.

The next day I went to my local grocery store and bought some items for my initial attempts and using an air fryer to prepare food.

Chung's Egg Rolls
Chung’s Egg Rolls

My first thing cooked was Chung’s Egg Rolls. These were my favorite brand that were available and I have always prepared them in my conventional oven in the past using a metal pan to bake them.

I sent the Gluck Airfryer for 12 minutes at 380 degrees and placed the frozen eggrolls on a wire rack about in the middle.

Here you see the eggrolls on a wire mesh rack with the drip tray installed in the bottom of the air fryer. A middle height selection was used for the rack. I did not turn the egg rolls over while they were cooking.

Here are the egg rolls done and cooling for 5 minutes before serving. They were nice and crispy on the outside and plenty hot on the inside. Next time I may raise the temperature up 10 degrees. I added just a little lowered sodium Kikkoman Soy Sauce to each one when I ate it and thought they were at least as good as the ones I had fixed in my oven in the past with a better, crunchy texture of the roll.

My initial review of this Gluck Air Fryer is good however I will need to cook some more items and gain more experience with it to say for sure. Look for more reviews here on my blog in the future and thanks for reading.

A 2014 mileage run to San Diego in less than thirty hours

A mileage run was paying for and using a ticket to fly mostly for the airline points and mileage accrual to use for future flights or airline status.

I used to travel a lot. I travelled for work and I travelled for pleasure. One thing you learned when spending 75% of your time away from home was to take advantage of every points or perk earning opportunity. By maximizing this you’d enjoy a lot more comfort which made your time away from home more tolerable.

Who wouldn’t want free plane trips and upgrades? The airlines were keeping track of the miles and segments you flew and also the amount of money you would spend. Frequent flyers like myself could calculate where our year end totals were likely to be and see where that would place us against the metrics needed to earn a particular level of benefits for flights in the future.

If it looked like you were going to fall short, or maybe you were trying to reach a higher level than just your business and planned pleasure travel would earn you then a mileage run would be something you would do. A mileage run was paying for and using a ticket to fly mostly for the airline points and mileage accrual to use for future flights or airline status.

I had been searching and found a cheap roundtrip ticket on Delta from Orlando to San Diego leaving early on a Tuesday morning. I drove from my home to the airport and was in the air on the way to Los Angeles before 7am. I don’t remember whether I got upgraded to First Class on any of my flights but it happened a lot back then and this was one of the ways I was trying to keep it happening the follow year.

I don't love LA
I really don’t love LA

I spent some time in the LAX airline club having some food and drink that was included in my membership before catching my short connecting flight down to San Diego.

Once there I caught a Uber or Lyft outside the airport over to a local Stone Brewing at Liberty Station for a late lunch and beers.

I spent a little under 3 hours there and the staff was pretty surprised to learn that I had flown out from Florida to have lunch there and was flying back afterwards and not spending any more time in San Diego on my trip.

One of the important ways how you hold down the cost of mileage runs, besides starting with a cheap ticket (probably under $200 in this case) and using airline club memberships, free drink tickets, using parking points for free parking, is using free hotel nights or just avoiding the need for a hotel room altogether. In this case my plan was to sleep on the redeye flight back to Florida that night.

There was also a Stone Brewing location inside the airport but I opted for spending the time before my departure inside the SAN airline club where anything I wanted would be complimentary.

Later that night I caught my flight back up to LAX and then got on the redeye and slept on the flight back to MCO. I paid for less than 1 day at the airport parking lot before driving home in time for breakfast and a normal start time for a work at home day. All told I spent just about 29 hours away from home on this mileage run. So YES, I did fly from Florida to San Diego for lunch as a mileage run.

I had another mileage run planned for just six days later on the following Tuesday and I’ll write about it and my other travels again here on this blog. Be sure to subscribe if you’d like to be notified when I post updates. I currently don’t travel like this but the photos and other digital notes I have help me remember and tell my stories of how it used to be.

I still hope for a time in the future when travel will be fun again.
