No health insurance = tax penalty?

Most of the time people call it Obamacare.  Sometimes ACA or Affordable Care Act.  One of the related topics of discussion that I frequently hear is concern from folks who don’t have medical insurance coverage through work, and don’t already pay for it on their own, about how much of a fine or penalty they may have to pay.
