Taco Bell Quesalupa – taste review of the new item launching during the Big Game

Taco Bell is using a commercial during the “big game” on Sunday to announce a new food item on their menu, the Quesalupa.

Folks who signed up in advance without knowing what it was going to be, were given an opportunity to buy them a day in advance, and that’s what I did today.  I used the web site to place my order after getting a special link via email, but the item shows up in the Taco Bell app on my smartphone now.

The ones I ordered and ate were made with seasoned beef, but it looks like seasoned beef, beans, shredded chicken, chicken, steak, or no meat can be chosen when ordering.  Add ons are also available via the app but for this taste test I didn’t add any.

Mine came wrapped in foil, and my first impression was that it was a heavier item than a taco.  It’s more like a burrito when thinking about it’s weight for it’s size.

I unwrapped mine and could smell the bread wrapper immediately.  Looking down at it from above the chunks of tomatoes, and pieces of lettuce and cheese could be seen.

Down in the bottom and initially out of sight was the reduced fat sour cream and seasoned ground beef.

For the initial taste test I held off on adding one of my hot sauces and just enjoyed the first couple of bites.  The primary tastes I detected were those of the bread wrap, and the mixture of seasoned beef, low fat sour cream and the tomatoes.  If you’re thinking that’s what a lot of Taco’s Bell’s food tastes like, you’d be right.  There’s nothing coming out of left field here, just things they already have packaged in a different way.

I added some Cholula Hot Sauce to mine, because that’s what I use with most Mexican foods, and continued to eat this first one, followed by one more.

I mentioned at the beginning of this post that these feel heavier than tacos, and I was satisfied after eating 2.  A light eater would probably be happy after only 1.  Another difference between the Quesalupa and tacos is that the bread wrapper did a great job of staying in one piece, and not splitting down the middle and letting the contents spill out.  That is usually a problem with crunchy tacos and sometimes with soft tacos, but these held up wonderfully.

I’m certain to order some of these again, and I want to try the chicken and steak ones, as well as adding onions and maybe removing the low fat sour cream to see how that changes the flavor combinations.  I’d rate this at 4.0 out of a 5.0 scale for things I’ve tried from Taco Bell.
